Anybody else smell a little Cause and Effect going on Thursday in our favorite U.S. Senate race. Let's head to the track for a little horserace coverage....

At 12:04 p.m. Thursday, Team Fiorina touts a new Survey USA poll showed that Carly Fiorina topping Sen. Barbara Boxer with a just-outside-the-margin-of- error 47 percent to 42 percent lead. They've been statistically even or Boxer slightly up in most other polls.

At 3:24 p.m., Team Boxer drops a mini A-bomb: A web ad -- a mere 15 seconds long -- that goes after Fiorina's anti-abortion stance. A July Field Poll shows that a wide margin of Californians support Roe v. Wade.

Now, it's only a web ad. And Team Boxer can say that they're confident, they have a lot more cash on hand, etc. But the fact that Boxer is dropping the abortion card BEFORE the Labor Day sprint begins may hint at some internal polling that shows this race is going the wrong way for her.
