Thread:
A major milestone was reached today in my personal environment. I came home and found a SNET/SBC 'engineer' walking in front of my house on the street inspecting the telephone wires. I asked him why, and he said they are planning on putting in ADSL, and he was inspecting the route - presumable looking to see who could fit in the radius.
I got cable 11 months ago, so "soon"- 2 to 12 months from now- I will have competition for my broadband access. It is nice to know that the cable company and the copper company are about to fight for my business. I feel I am worth it!
The interesting thing, however, was the way the are doing it.
I am too far from the CO for DSL. However, on my street, a main street for a suburb of one-acre zoned homes, are a set of corporate campus buildings. They have a concentration 'box' there, which will be upgraded to handle DSL, and I am just within the DSL reach from there.
Anyway, he said they are NOT running fiber from the campus box back to the CO- metal will do. He didn't know what they ran, but I assume it is T3.
They will run fiber in the future, he thinks, but are not planning to now. They are really planning the remote 'boxes' (probably T3 DSLAMS?) and placement to run ADLS. He also thought they were planning to run fiber to support broadcast TV!
I guess fiber to the business isn't profitable yet, and fiber to the neighborhood isn't either, unless TV is attached. |
