Probably not. In any case its a question with little relevance to the current fiscal situation in the US.

but risking a default is just too dangerous.

Also not relevant to the current fiscal situation of the US. At least in the short run. Not raising the debt ceiling does not directly create a situation of default, since (as has been pointed out many times) payments on the debt are well below federal revenue.
