Alexa -- Coal or fluorspar? Lots of both in southern IL. The guys in the fluorspar mines (and in the adjacent limestone mines) didn't usually develop lung problems; the mines were quite a bit cleaner (ie less dusty). Pretty country, too. Many of my ancestors were miners in the Ruhr Valley; once they got over here, they stayed away from mining.
