Technology is the taking of raw materials and transforming them via design and manufacture into presumably useful things. It is a collection of techniques and processes which takes some kind of raw material and transforms it into something else

It takes technology to take steel, rubber, etc. and transform them into a car.

Gold is just gold. No transformation takes place beyond making coins or bullion or jewelry out of it. The technology lies in the transformational process, not in the end result. There certainly is mining technology which is required, but this is clearly simply part of the process, and not the end result. A chip is not a 'technology,' it is a collection of silicone and metal which the technological process has transformed into something useful.

In other words, the resulting object is not the 'technology' regardless of its uses.

When you use a cell phone, do you say "Gee, look at the wonderful technology I am holding" or do you say "Gee, look at this wonderfull cell phone I have in my hand"?

I hope the latter.

You have committed a rare grammaticolinguistic [I need to trademark that word] faux pas which I know it is impossible for you to acknowledge, but it will be fun to watch the spin.
