No disrespect intended toward Mr. Furman. What I said is cold hard fact.
My kids understand this. We live in a city where there are neighborhoods that would be similar to the "hell hole" Robert refers to.
And, we know they are there and we are here and that's the way we want to keep it. We do NOT want them crossing the tracks and coming into our neighborhood. We also prefer their kids not be bused to "our" schools. Let them keep to themselves, kill themselves, or whatever --- just keep put "over there".
They've got their section 8, food stamps, welfare, and medical.... and we're happy to subsidize it all ----> so long as they stay put.
Now, I know this sounds cruel, but in our primitive minds, its basically how we think and how we act. Social programs like welfare are partially about "containment". Its a form of benevolent crowd control.
Sure, we are willing to help the poor, give to charities, support the homeless shelter, AND SO WE SHOULD. But let's be honest, we are doing those things with the assumption that "they" will stay put and not bother us.
NOT IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!
is really subliminally floating around in all of our heads.
and fwiw, I'm not saying its a GOOD THING that we are like this; I'm just saying that this is human nature. |
