Something is wrong with your Network setup to give you that problem.
If you have a gigabit Ethernet card in each computer, a gigabit 4 or 8 port switch
connected to your router, set up network as home or workplace, give each
computer a specific name ie. Comp. 1, Comp.2, authorize sharing on the drives
you want to share than each will communicate at the speed of your cards/switch
not going thorough the Internet but on your home Network. Other computers plugged
into the switch can surf the internet will not slow your data transfer down.
I stand to be corrected, but works for me at work place or home settings.
