Holly, I don't plan on beating the gun-control issue to death here, and what with the Slickster's antics, I don't think I can find the time to devote to that issue right now anyway. But maybe later on we could start a gun-control/gun rights discussion thread.

You're right that the Constitution was written in a different time, with some hypocritic things like regarding various humans as chattel. Nevertheless the Declaration of Independence had the correct wording; and now that we all know what is a human, all humans can lay claim to the rights put forth in the founding documents.

As for Uzis and other fully-automatic weapons -- they are heavily restricted, and indeed impossible to legally privately own in some states, including my state -- and I don't feel that infringes on my right to bear the most common arms. By "common arms" I mean regular repeating rifles and pistols. Whether a pistol shoots one bullet or six, each bullet carries a deadly menace; therefore the handling and use of any firearm is and has always been a deadly serious business, and not to be taken lightly. There are other restrictions besides the full-auto one which most gun owners don't feel are an infringement on the basic right -- but I sure don't want some cop showing up unannounced to make sure my pistol is secured properly -- that would violate my right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure.
