Re:There was a time that INTC would introduce a new chip and charge an arm and a leg for it...and when the need for a fast chip was required...they would then release that and milk it.

Now that AMD and CYRX have competing chips in the mid and low range (80% of the MPU market), INTC has to cut prices to hold onto market share and keep AMD at bay.

Dave,

I believe the question asked relating to this was how would this adversely affect AMAT? Surely INTC is not going to slow down on capital equipment expenditures because they are getting more competition?!?! If my understanding of A. Grove is correct, he won't be waiting for AMD and Cyrix to catch up to their technology. If anything, he should be ramping up equipment purchases IMO. AMD and Cyrix would have a hard time keeping up. I remember several years ago INTC lived by a "scorched earth" policy and left others in the dust. If they get too preoccupied now with equipment costs now they will be eschewing a policy that has been successful for so many years and is largely responsible for where they currently stand.
