Scrapps, the following paragraph was in WSJ Monday edition in a story that gave details of the Friday analyst meeting:

"Mr. Otellini said the company in coming months will integrate a secondary memory chip onto the Pentium II, which will help reduce costs. Intel also plans to integrate more multimedia functions into products known as chip sets, which sit adjacent to the microprocessor on a computer motherboard. These products, by adding functions such as sound and modems that had required separate chips, will help Intel capture more revenue for each computer."

I'm thinking this may also be hurting 3Com stock price Friday and Monday.

At the last Qtr earnings CC, some analyst asked Intel if they would be integrating multi-media functions into future processors (ala Cyrix MediaGX, I presume), and one of the Intel guys, probably Mr. Otellini, vigorously denied that, saying "we've been there and done that, and it's not fun". But, nobody asked about sound and modem chips on the motherboard.

I still think a modem chipset on the motherboard is a dump idea. So your modem goes haywire. Great. Throw the whole motherboard away.
