If large numbers of them are xenophobic, why do they like us?

You'd have to read Pollack's book. It goes into extensive historical detail in an attempt to relate it to present realities.

Khatami is constrained by the clerics' stranglehold on political power. If the students turn their back on him, they'll have little or no voice, and no choice but to hit the streets, where they'll get slaughtered.

The problem with destabilizing the clerics, according to Pollack, is xenophobia. The vast majority of the Iranian population will rally around them in the event we are seen to do this. It's counter-intuitive, I know, but Pollack makes a very convincing argument based on a very deep understanding of Iran. The Gulf has been his specialty, after all.

I recommend the book highly.

Good joke, by the way.
