"Time it was -and what at a time it was, it was a time of innocence, a time of confidences." The late 60's and early 70's faded and became part of my "youth". By the late 70's, I don't remember looking back at all. Like you, too busy working my husband through law school and looking ahead to a family.

We lived in the city until three years ago. As long as we used private schools and didn't allow the boys to leave the yard, it was fine, but when a twelve year old has to ask if he can ride his bike up the street to a friend's and you say yes and then stand outside and watch until he gets there---what kind of self-confidence can a child build in a situation like that? So now they can ride their bikes everywhere (-and I still worry).

Are you ever struck by the clarity and purity of Briana's eyes? We had the same innocent, untouched look, too, and our parents tried so hard to save us. It just can't be done. No matter what the childhood environment, a child will want to flee it. Briana wants the small town freedom she never had; I wanted to escape the confines of my small town upbringing and get to the big city to try my wings. What you give Briana are the tools to handle whatever life offers her and my guess is that you've done that very well. Life at the end of our century holds no monopoly on pain, longing and harshness. It just feels that way to us because we created these perfect innocents and love them so desperately. Our most difficult task is letting them go.
