The biggest European banks are considered part of the national fabric, so I don't think they would be allowed to fail, even if their debt is trading like some might. DB just bought Postbank, a huge network of retail depositors and a great source of funding and stability. ING took a lot of UK deposits that had been in Iceland and showed no immediate interest in government support funding the Dutch were offering on Friday. Barclays is also buying up assets from broken firms like Lehman.

In the end, there will be survivors and names that are now history like Lehman, Bear Stearns, etc.
