The old action at a distance thingie. Yep, phenomena is indefinable at very last after all. The what of anything cannot be answered any more than its "purpose" can. We cannot know what a field is, nor matter. We can only model them in terms of other analogues which will eventually fail, as they are not the thing, and cannot have the characteristics of what we are trying to explain. If a field is unique, then no conceptual reality or thing can model it. Its actions are its actions and the fact that it acts over a distance and no other physical phenomena does, may just have to be accepted. We may learn more about how fields operate, but we will never learn what they are. We may never in the end comprehend the way in which they can interact with matter over space and time. Invisible tentacles of force are a reality that we may know of, but of which we may never resolve in terms of our experience. In the end, it is our prejudices that are operating that wonder at forces, but wonder not at matter and the corporeal. Our experience is of being able to interact with the world in certain physical ways involving the impingement of matter, which we say "makes sense". But in the end the sense it makes hides as deep a mystery as we see in force without the touch of matter. The production of force within the gravity well of earth invokes the use of atomic fields of electricity and radiant energy to provide the motion of physical bodies.
No motion can take place without the initiation of a field force that acts through anything or nothing at all and with no mass or physical being, as though the field was a magic fabric.
The universe is magic. We are children at the magicians show, and now and then we have to have it explained, that we saw a magic trick and should applaud. Ice cream will be served at the end of the party and you may remove you hats.
