"Republic" mainly means rule by someone other than a monarch. Its also sometimes used as a short form for "democratic republic". Technically direct democracy (which the Greeks had as some times in some city-states (at least Athens, I don't know as much about the political systems of the city-states besides Athens and Sparta) would be both democratic, and a republic, but usually "democratic republic" is used for representative democracy". Athens is more known for the direct democracy, but they did have people function as representatives as well if not anything like our system.

Marx's ideas was a response to a horrible class war where the rich capitalists made life absolute hell for the peasants

Marx's ideas (at least the closest they have ever come to actual expression) made life absolute hell for a huge number of people while ending the life for many others.

The actions of the "rich capitalists" during the rapid development of the industrial revolution made life much better overall. Certainly so much change results in a lot of disruption and pain, but mean wealth, median wealth, and even the typical wealth of the poor, increased a lot because of all the change and development. Life was "hell" for the poor compared to life today, but it was mostly an improvement from what had come before.
