The moderate wing of Iran tends to be supported by the younger Iranians and in my opinion seems to be more capable than the conservatives. They are using Turkey's war with the Kurds to improve relations with Turkey which is very smart. Turkey sees no parallel between their treatment of the Kurds with the Serbs' treatment of Muslims in Kosovo and Bosnia.

As long as the moderates improve their position in Iran versus the conservatives, I think that would be a plus for our side because it would bring some rationality into play in the area, something it needs. If the US loses some power in the area as a result, well maybe that is necessary since management of the Starr investigation takes precedence anyway. The fact that the moderates are supported by the young Iranians means time is on their side.

Iraq also claims to be talking with Turkey.

A major hurdle to be scaled between Iran and Turkey is the secular issue. The conservative Turkish military and the Islamic Iranian conservatives would never get along if they were completely in power in their respective countries.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Iranian moderates are able to do what we and the UN couldn't - isolate Iraq.
