I'd agree with that except the last President to inherit problems of this magnitude (imo), Abraham Lincoln, got reelected.

Obama clearly has been elected as such an historic juncture in our Republic; whether he's up to the task remains to be seen. With realistic public support instead of non-stop partisanship which is all I've seen for the past 16 years, there may be a flying chance things will turn around.

There simply never was, nor is, any way for the US to continue to eat the rest of the (developing) world's lunch. It's all a matter of whether we make a graceful transition or a chaotic transition.

So far, we've chosen magical beliefs which have lead straight to chaos. Will we continue to make such choices? Time, as always, will tell.
