Another suggestion: along with the PeopleMarks and the SubjectMarks, how about a People cross Subject marks. The basic idea is the same as the PeopleMarks, except that the system would take an intersection with the SubjectMarks of the user. Clicking on the link would bring the list of people who you have chosen to PeopleMark, and clicking on their names would only show the messages posted to the subjects that you have chosen to SubjectMark. (The count of new messages would, of course, also reflect only the messages in the intersection set.)
