WASHINGTON - Wesley Clark (news - web sites) has edged close behind Howard Dean (news - web sites) in New Hampshire in a tracking poll after focusing most of his efforts in the state while other leading Democratic presidential candidates are battling in Iowa.

Dean was at 29 percent in the American Research Group tracking poll released Thursday, while Clark was at 24 percent and John Kerry (news - web sites) at 15 percent. Fifteen percent were undecided, while other candidates were in single digits. Clark has been gaining on Dean throughout the week in this poll, picking up more support from women over age 45.

Dean has been campaigning heavily in Iowa, competing with Kerry, Dick Gephardt (news - web sites) and John Edwards (news - web sites) for the Jan. 19 caucuses. That has allowed Clark the freedom to spend more time than most rivals campaigning in New Hampshire, which has its primary Jan. 27.

The New Hampshire poll showed Joe Lieberman (news - web sites) at 7 percent, Edwards at 5 percent, Gephardt at 4 percent, Dennic Kucinich at 1 percent and Al Sharpton (news - web sites) with less than 1 percent.

The ARG tracking poll of 622 likely primary voters was taken Monday through Wednesday and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
