Socialism gets a black eye in America. It's "bad" when it helps out the masses, but "good" when it helps out the rich and powerful (aka corporate welfare). At this point the whole debate about socialism/capitalism has become terribly blurred in America. The rich accept socialism (govt. subsides, corporate welfare) when it helps their business ventures prosper. In fact, many business ventures wouldn't have a chance at making a profit without government backing. Yet, the media and political pundits deride socialism as evil, the next step to Communism, it must be opposed at every turn, yada yada yada. It's an interesting double-speak game that is played.

I think Orwellianism is a better term to describe contemporary American society. We've got an "inner circle" (the Party) that manipulates public opinion and creates wars for their own benefit. They also control the government and the massive spending by the government for their own benefit. George Orwell wouldn't be at all surprised to see that America has evolved into a reflection of his 1984 vision.
