Republicans are a discredited minority party now. And there is a great split amongst them between moderates and unrepentent rightwing Bushies, plus other subgroups. That will take many years to work out. Hopefully the moderates win.

You misread the election. Only unethical jerrymandering kept the GOP from losing 75 seats. It was a wipeout and since the election the disgust with the GOP rightwing has gotten even deeper. I think Bush has less than a 30% approval rating now. I'm suprised it's that high. What's to approve of? Nothing.

In other words, Republicans don't control any national elections anymore. And the only way they have a chance in 2008 is if the Dems make a big mistake and if someone like McCain can convince people his selling out to Bush was a thing of the past.

The other problem for the GOP is that none of their top candidates are acceptable to the base. But if you get rid of the base, you lose your zealots and your energy. Live by the evangelical nuts die by them, baby. Some say it's so bad Guiliani's only hope is to run as an independent, which would make it a three way race and doom McCain or Romney.

Actually your best candidate is Chuck Hagel. If you people were smart you'd put 100% behind him. He could actually win.
