"Asta Funding (nasdaq: ASFI), a leading collector and servicer of consumer debt, has been volatile on worries it may have difficulty finding new debt to purchase. But strong March-quarter results sparked a rebound in the shares, up more than 20% since the May 9 announcement. Per-share profit soared 34% to $0.51, handily above the consensus estimate of $0.45. Revenue jumped 30%, keyed by strong cash collections. In the quarter, Asta paid $37 million for debt with face value of roughly $800 million.

Asta has further upside potential given its operating momentum, strong market position and attractive valuation. The three analysts following Asta have been raising profit estimates. For fiscal 2005 ending September, the consensus per-share estimate is $1.93, up from $1.86 three months ago. For 2006, the consensus is $2.18, up from $2.10 three months ago. At 13 times expected 2006 earnings, the shares appear cheap. Asta is a best buy."
