I always get the giggles with this kind of statement. Satellites can't even compete with land-based systems in urban areas. The only applications are rural applications, and cross-country applications. GPS doesn't even work under a tree.

Also, geosynchronous satellites are too far away for upstream handheld transmission. This means low-altitude birds have to be used. This means there have to be a lot of them, and they'll constantly move, very quickly. I'm not entirely convinced any of it's going to work very well, if at all. It's a niche thing, and will do nicely in its niche. Otherwise, stay away from satellites, I say.
