Japanese short sales . Frank I could not find the earlier post and poster, I think it was VT, or nspolar or maybe Roebear... Anyway, since I live here I thought I would get a straight answer from a local broker. Just got off the phone and have this to help clarify the previous comment by ? on the change of rules here ...

Well and the new is . . . there are no changes... Hard to believe I know but what was explained to me was that the commission or government body overseeing trading had issued a warning to the effect that brokers or traders engaging in large volume short sales would be monitored and possibly investigated and that if any wrong doing was found they would be punished. Now since the guidelines are vague and the punishments undetermined (murky isnt it? you don`t know which rules it is you might have broken AND you don`t know what the punishement will be or rather you know, suspension of license but for how long ? Permanently?) then players decided to avoid the risks and covered what had been sold short. My friend confirmed there is no uptick rule in Japan.

As a private investor the rules on who is allowerd a short margin account are strict (although they change according to which co you do business with ) but in the case of Daiwa you need almost 200,000 usd in net worth in your trading account to get started ( actually 152,000 usd , damn exchange rate).

Hope it helps,

stephan

PS I posted this to you since you started the thread and I meant this post to be : To Thread
