Bloggers slamming Frist book on Amazon
By John Byrne RAW STORY EDITOR
Bloggers around the country are throwing dirt on Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's bioterrorism book after a comment he made about former Bush advisor Richard Clarke. advertisement
Frist's book, "When Every Moment Counts: What You Need to Know About Bioterrorism from the Senate's Only Doctor," has plummeted in the Amazon user rankings.
So far, in fact, that Amazon seem's to have taken the average user ranking off the lead page, which at the time of this writing had dropped to 1.42 out of five stars. One star is the lowest possible ranking on Amazon.
The comment which spurred the controvery was one made by Frist himself last week. Said Frist, "I am troubled that someone would sell a book, trading on their service as a government insider with access to our nation's most valuable intelligence, in order to profit from the suffering that this nation endured on September 11, 2001."
Frist's office, reached by telephone today, did not respond to requests for comment.
The slamathon appears to have been incited by a post on a popular blog, Eschaton. A post by Atrios on Sunday incited a phalanx of liberal bloggers to post their reviews on Amazon.
Many reviewers posted this exact quote in his/her comment, along with the remark: "I agree with Bill Frist." Seventy-three of 74 reviewers said they found the comment "helpful."
Frist's quote appears in posts on page after page of reviews. Some mentioned that Frist mentions mad cow disease nowhere in his book.
"This is pandering sensationalism," another reader wrote.
"Have you no shame?" remarked another.
One reviewer asserted that Frist's advice on what to do in case of a terrorism attack is peculiar.
"Rather than ... duct-taping our windows and doors, Frist suggests rather that we switch from a diversified portfolio to one which will profit most from the coming crisis. His no nonsense approach to crisis investing includes chapters on shortselling, margin calls, and inside advice on pharmaceutical stocks."
In an apparent jab at Frist, a number of viewers recommended a non-existent book, "The Confederate Flag Still Flies in the South: What You Need to Know About Bioterrorism from the Senate's Only Doctor."
The book, published by Rowman & Littlefield, is ranked 94,443 on Amazon's sales chart.
