Compare, Contrast

G-Scobe

Notice the care this New York Times editorial takes when treating Kofi Annan today, all hedged bets and mild condemnation. It's only Kojo, after all. Confined to those shifty Swiss. Not a big deal, besides the only people who care are the warmongers angry that Kofi wouldn't sign on to the Iraq war. Just do better next time.

In other words, par for the Kofi course.*

Now, Enron. Hang 'em high! Trust no one. Spare no one. Cast the net wide! Wider! The root of all evil. Crush all Imperial CEOs. Ken Lay - why wait for the trial? Even named a disease after it.

And we're not even counting the august body of work that is former Enron advisor Paul Krugman. His ravings on the subject include the observation that Enron's crimes were more significant than 9/11 - an absurdity of such magnititude that it still takes the breath away.

* See this op-ed describing the oil for food investigation as "an assault on the U.N." The very investigation, an assault. Hey, at least they weren't involved in private enterprise.

UPDATE: Joe from St. Louis, in the comments, makes a good point: The Times' William Safire was the (lone) voice of reason pushing for a harder look at Oil for Food. Indeed, which makes the editorial board's insouciance all the more inexcusable - they cannot claim ignorance.

UPDATE II: JZ in the comments brings to light deeper idiocy in the Minneapolis Star Tribune (sub required) which turned an editorial on Kofi's malfeasance into an indictment of Norm Coleman and President Bush. Bravo.
