Not sure on the closures. I remember all attention was focused on the pancake freeway in Oakland. Do remember a news report of one resolute Bay bridge user, whose car was damaged in the collapsed section, wanting her $1.00 back from the Bridge Commission.

My mother tells stories of her youth, hearing the pile drivers hammering the pilings into the bay, when one of the big ones was being built. Not sure which one, though, not an historian on bridges.
