I have my beefs with the CPI. For the last two years (under a Democrat, at that!) my SSI has been held flat, despite the fact that the things on which I spend my money are not displaying the courtesy to do same. <grousing mumbles>

I agree that figuring inflation is not simple. Indeed, like so much macroeconomics I suspect necromancy is a major method. Tracking price trends of a primary commodity, like petroleum, is not so hard. Tracking trends for commodities that are evolving at (figurative) superluminal speed, like consumer electronics or the rats' nest of insured healthcare, now there is a challenge.
