Taiwan Quakes Cause Minor Damage At Tainan Indus Park

TAIPEI (AP)--A series of earthquakes that shook southern Taiwan early Monday caused brief shutdowns at factories that make computer parts, seismologists and officials said Monday.
The tremors shook buildings and caused shutdowns at the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park, said Lin Wei-cheng, an official at the high-tech park.

Lin said machinery stopped for a few seconds at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM), the world's largest contractor for computer chips, and at Chi Mei Optoelectronics, which makes liquid crystal displays.

Officials at the two companies couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

Tainan, Taiwan's fourth-largest city, is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) southwest of the capital, Taipei. [Taipei=where the UMC FABS are]

The first quake early Monday was the strongest, with a magnitude of 5.3. The tremor was followed by two others - with magnitudes of 4.6 and 4.8 - in the same general location, about seven kilometers (4.2 miles) west of Tainan.

A 5-magnitude quake can cause considerable damage.
