Microsoft got rich from a language. They got started with a dialect of Basic and leveraged that into other areas to become the money machine they are today. Sun is trying to do the same thing. Microsoft still sells millions of copies of Visual Basic. Oracle also sells a lot of products containing languages. They make a lot on apps, but they got that position by leveraging their database languages. Languages are essentially a platform that can branch out into many areas, particularly databases.
