I'm rather enjoying this debate on strategies.

I think we should all remember that these things are all tools. Some people have a knack for certain tools (is it talent, philosophy or merely genetic) and get superior results with them. In my local AAII Computerized Investing group, we have a commercial artist who can visualize things that I can't see in a chart independently - even though I can see them easily after he points them out. Try as I might, I'm not conditioned to get the superior results he gets from his system. [By the way, instead of time, he places his sells immediately after purchase to yield his expected percentage gain - that's one way to handle selling, the hardest part of investing.]

But how much a coward you are (that's me), how decisive you are, your risk tolerance and how well you sleep when you are down -10% in one day (plus more) will effect how you fare with any system. If you make 15% returns in your system and someone else makes 20% in his when the market is making 10% - does that make you wrong (especially as you might not be able to do as well with his system as he does)? What you really want to do is do the best with the system that is most natural to you - or find a better system.

And that's why we look at each others work - to learn. But always remember, there were some guys in Italy who made better violins than others. And you can bet they all used about the same tools.

....Sorry to make it so long.....
