Police in Norman, Oklahoma are investigating what led a man to instigate a confrontation with them by threatening to shoot people and vehicles, KWTV-TV reported.

The would-be gunman called emergency dispatchers on Sunday evening and said he was “dealing with some severe mental illness.” When the operator asked for his location, the man said authorities could determine that from his caller ID, then added, “I’m going to go out there and just start shooting anything that looks like a Muslim after what they did to France.”

According to the Norman Transcript, the man was identified as 47-year-old Mark James Riedel.

After making his anti-Muslim threat and hanging up, Riedel called dispatchers again, saying, “It’s no emergency. You guys seem to be ignoring me. I’m just going to start shooting at cars.”

Riedel was outside his home when two officers arrived to confront him. The encounter was filmed from a distance by an unidentified neighbor. Officers can be heard telling Riedel to drop the gun. A police spokesperson said Riedel refused to follow the officers’ orders, prompting them to shoot him. Riedel was listed in stable condition at a local hospital as of Monday night. He has not been charged pending the completion of an investigation into the incident.
