The largest debate of the last century between Einstein and the quantum mechanics folks revolved arond this exact question.

The issue was the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle (HUP), which states you can never ever ever ever know anything for sure, you can never know both the position of something and the velocity for sure. The more you know about one the less you know about the other.

Einstein went on to say: ":god does not play dice with the universe"; the quantum folks, Neils Bohr, Heisenberg, Dirac, Shrodinger, Wheeler, etc said: "not only does god play dice with the universe he does in the dark-lol.

The New York times followed this debate until Einstein and his buddies finally conceded they were wrong.
