That might change with the financial reforms though, if people decide to put their money in the market instead. And that can happen only if they let US institutions take charge of the banking and insurance industry. Currently, financial outfits in India can take people's money and literally run away with impunity. Indian insurance companies like the LIC, GIC etc. shove substandard investment products down people's throats in the name of "insurance", and the people have no other choice. No wonder that people turn to gold when there are so many sharks around, both in the public and private sectors. Giving a free rein to American companies is the only way out.
