This idea of developing model revisions on-the-fly is a bad one. It is natural for researchers to make "adjustments" they believe will improve the statistics. But you need to prove the rationale, not just the numbers.

When in grad school I worked in the economic research division of the university which mostly amounted assisting a professor with econometric regressions. There was always excitement about newly discovered correlations but if it wasn't the in model to begin with it might be looked at later, but not as part of the current study. I don't know why it was like that but one can envision that it was precisely to avoid the circumstances we're seeing with climate change research.
