defending your argument really is about competing values more than facts- and I don't think arguing with someone about competing values ever adds anything to either side of the debate, in terms of making anyone find the "weak" points of their argument.

There is a difference between expressing values and making an argument. I agree that most of what goes on SI political threads is expressing values and mistaken for argument. I suspect that is because:

-Most of the time most people post for bonding and validation purposes, not to make an argument;

-Most people don't have a rational and considered basis for most of their views; and

-If they do, they are not equipped or inclined to express it well in an honest give-and-take environment.

But I disagree that there is no value in trying. Yes, articles are generally smarter and better written. But you can't interact with them and so much of the value is in the shared analysis. Sometimes you can gain an insight or shed light on an argument flaw. I admit that the wheat to chaff ratio is nearly prohibitive, but I have gained understanding on a number of topics through that interaction and am better off for it.
