JF, you are so right! I grew up not too far from their in Riverdale and no one gave safety a second thought. The Anacostia river was a source of endless fun and walks finding all the eel's as a child. Especially when the Shad runs came through. We loved it after the hurricanes would come through and trap all the fish in small pools.

I'm tying to think when it changed....I remember very clearly how ugly the school life changed for me in the seventh grade when bussing started. The parents of my generation never knew, and to this day deny the effect this dramatic change had on our lives. Now after almost 20 years I hear it's finally going away in many states. Taking away pride in ones local school was a big mistake. The children suffered for the guilt of the previous generation.

Shortly thereafter, like most middle class families we moved out to the suburbs of Crofton. What a change that was. I found out what Bass fishing was like, in lakes hardly anyone had touched.

Maybe television change the innoccents of so many people. I clearly remember the shock and discussions about the first movie's dealing with women being raped. Then the first movie dealing with child napping. Those movies and the hundreds that followed sure scared a lot of fathers and mothers. I don't know if the chicken followed the egg or vice a versa. I tend to think decensitizing people increases their tolerance for it.
Take Care, Michael
