You have before you a number of good answers and scripture references.
Free will is a challenging subject. Looking up "will" in the Bible should also help. A great verse is: "He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." I am quoting, not having a concordance/software on my computer. In any event, though God is "not willing that any should perish...", it is obvious from other scripture that many will indeed perish---which means, by man's own choice, he has decided not to repent and come to God.
Your illustration is a fine one.
Have a sensational week.

J.

One week without God, makes one weak. My choice, by the way.
