Now that is interesting. Sun pushing an NCR system benchmark... what will they think of next?

The X86 flavor of Solaris has always been at or near the top for Intel architecture systems in TPC benchmarks, but Sun has had a hard time finding partners to do the benchmarks with. The Specweb is especially interesting given the looming battle for internet servers.

I suspect that Sun is gearing up to take on MSFT for 64 bit OS dominance, given the recent PR with Intel around Merced support. They seem to have picked up at least a few decent-sized players, and they have a couple of years to lay the groundwork. At the moment there is no serious competition for 64 bit mindshare. MSFT will need to watch their flank if Solaris starts to make progress on Intel platforms during the Merced transition, especially in the server space.
