Maybe they are displacing their resentment for being laughed at and marginalized for believing in fundamentalist creationism into feeling like they are being laughed at and marginalized for being Christians. If you believe that only fundamentalist Christians are "real" Christians and the rest are Christians in name only, then that naturally follows.
