Geneva Technology Teams with Compaq in Global Alliance to Deliver a Carrier-Grade Billing Solution Benchmarked Against 20 Million Subscribers
MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar. 20, 2001--Geneva Technology and Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news) today announced a global alliance to cooperate on carrier-grade billing solutions for the convergent billing market.

The two companies will optimize Geneva Technology's award winning billing solution, Geneva, to run on Compaq AlphaServers(TM) running Tru64(TM) UNIX, in order to deliver solutions with the highest degree of scalability, operability, availability and maintainability.

Recent benchmarks have demonstrated that Geneva's high performance rating and billing engines running on Compaq hardware can process the high volumes of events that a tier 1 operator such as BT Cellnet or Turkcell, with many millions of subscribers and a massive volume of events, will need to handle.

Geneva Technology and Compaq are implementing a joint program to provide not only improved solutions to the multi-service communications provider market, but also consultancy on topics including system sizing, growth planning and operational effectiveness.

Extensive testing and benchmarking activities will continue to ensure that Compaq customers have a highly scalable billing solution that can charge for any service over any network and deliver carrier-grade performance at all sizes of installation.

Using Geneva, operators and service providers are able to tap new revenue streams, develop sophisticated cross-service marketing strategies and build stronger relationships with customers.

Geneva Technology and Compaq have run a successful series of benchmark tests, unprecedented in their scope and complexity, based on a database of 20 million residential subscribers. The realistic simulation of a live installation consisted of simultaneous rating and billing, with a CRM application running in the background.

The rating process involved processing unsorted events records and updating the customer database; for billing it was assumed that the entire billing cycle would be completed during normal office hours over a month. Essential back-office activities, such as the archiving and deletion of rated events, were also benchmarked.

Mitesh Desai, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Compaq's telecommunications unit, Compaq Telecom, said, ``Geneva's robust, resilient and well-designed architecture provides the extreme high performance needed to handle the volume throughput that major operators require.'' Desai continued, ``IP networks and new data services coming on to the market will generate far more event records than traditional voice telephony. These benchmarks represent a significant landmark for both our companies, particularly as they have enabled us to prove to BT Cellnet that we can easily handle their predicted future volume of events, not just for GSM traffic but also for the higher volumes that GPRS will involve.''

In addition to porting Geneva to Compaq's Tru64(TM) UNIX AlphaServers(TM), the alliance will bring senior technical personnel together to assure optimization and future interoperability. Joint marketing activities are also part of the agreement. ``Compaq brings more than two decades of telecommunications experience to the U.S. market, and our partnership leverages powerful synergies for the benefit of our customers,'' said Idar Voldnes, President of Geneva Technology Inc. ``Together we are bringing to market an exciting, proven solution that will enable mobile carriers to offer innovative new services.''
