ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 1997--Allied Telesyn and Lucent Technologies today announced an alliance that provides Local Area Network (LANs) customers with a fiber-based, end-to-end solution for desktop cabling needs.
The alliance is a result of the increasing demand for flexible, fiber-optic data networks with higher-bandwidth capabilities. Products offered through the alliance can deliver a Fiber-to-the-Desk (FTTD(a)) solution that is inherently more reliable and secure than traditional cabling solutions. The companies will offer these products through common resellers throughout the United States.
Fiber has the ability to support high-speed applications such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and Gigabit Ethernet, and is widely used throughout many premises' network infrastructures. Recent price reductions for end-point connections used in FTTD applications bring the benefits of fiber to the end user, easing the transition to the desktop. For someone sitting at one of these desktops, it means secure, reliable delivery of data transmissions, and sufficient bandwidth to run interactive multimedia applications.
"This agreement brings together two leading suppliers in the fiber-optic industry," said Anders Swahn, executive vice president, world wide sales and marketing at Allied Telesyn. "Our common goal is to help further the development of fiber in data LANs and to provide better, easier-to-use technology for the fiber environment."
Both Lucent Technologies and Allied Telesyn are pioneers in the fiber-optic data transmission marketplace. Lucent Technologies is a leading manufacturer of fiber-optic cabling system products and offers fiber-to-the-desk (FTTD) infrastructure solution through its SYSTIMAX Structured Cabling System (SCS) fiber product line. Allied Telesyn is the world's largest supplier of fiber-based Ethernet LAN hardware including switches, hubs, and fiber-optic adapters.
"A fiber-to-the-desk implementation provides a terrific future-proofing solution since the network is easy to expand and can support data rates of up to 2.5 Gigabits per second," said Bob Mohalley, business management vice president of Lucent Technologies. "In addition to supporting higher-bandwidth applications such as the transfer of medical image files, including X-rays and sonograms, fiber is unequaled for applications that require high levels of security such as in the financial industry or the military."
Lucent also said its SYSTIMAX SCS now offers an Electronic Industry Association/Telecommunications Industry Association-approved, single-point administration architecture that extends fiber's distance capabilities while assuring the highest levels of security. Fiber data transmission can be extended three times beyond that of traditional cabling products to 300 meters in premises applications.

Lucent Technologies, located in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds, and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, consumer and business telephone systems and microelectronic components. Bell Laboratories is the research and development arm for the company. Lucent Technologies was formed as a result of AT&T's restructuring and became a fully independent company -- separate from AT&T -- on Sept. 30, 1996.
