I don't have a wife, so I don't have that problem. ;^)
One thing my husband and I do talk about in detail are taxes. I do our taxes using Quicken, Quickbooks and Turbotax. He collects all his information, I collect all mine, and we discuss things like timing of donations, how much to put into IRAs, stuff like that.
Neither of us spend significant amounts of money without discussing that, too.
So, it's hard for me to believe that IF Kerik's wife hired an illegal immigrant, and paid her cash under the table, and did not pay payroll taxes, Kerik had no idea. He was New York City Police Commissioner! And that's several crimes committed in his own household! Violations of immigration laws, state wage and hour laws, federal employment laws, IRS law. Not good for a law officer to be a scofflaw.
I assume Kerik probably used a CPA, given his income level. The CPA would have asked him, "do you have a baby-sitter deduction?" Probably not, his income level was too high so it phased out, but still, it would have come up, I have no doubt. |
