Dale, thanks for the post and the insightful TigerInvestor article. I had just finished talking to my Dad after looking at his professionally managed portfolio.

He has nine funds, seven are back-loaded, only one beat the S&P 500 in the past 3 years and two in the past 5 years. None are over 7% in 1999 and two are at -10% for the same period.

However, in the long run he has done pretty well with them. He is in his 80s, does not have the time or inclination to manage them as you or I would (and I am nowhere near your style or level of expertise).

I advised him to take his worst performing fund, a Merrill Lynch midcap that has done -30% in the past 52 weeks, and put it into an S&P 500.
