I'd love to hear how an open-minded person who has not yet decided who to vote for, such as our own Lane3, will view this endorsement.

Damn. You made me go back and read it carefully. <g>

If you're asking about how well it was written, I was not impressed, either on the first or the second read. There was not a lot in there about Obama. They like his temperament and his smarts. And his thoughtfulness. They didn't address his policies. Wonder why.

[On a personal note, there was a post here the other day about his detachment, which I found interesting because it resonates with me. I have that kind of detachment, too. It's something you don't see often. It didn't come naturally to me but rather it's something I trained in myself so that now it is automatic. I haven't read Obama's books so I don't have a sense of where his came from. But I've always had this lingering reservation about mine because it's so sane it could be nuts. If I'm nuts, that's of no consequence. If Obama is nuts...]

That first paragraph about civil rights, what was that about? Stuck out like a sore thumb. Strange lead-in.

Then there was the self-consciousness of the piece, the need to explain how they could so something as shocking as recommend a Democrat. Too much about them, not enough about Obama.

And lastly, the last part of it was about how screwed up McCain and the Republicans are, which may be the key to the endorsement. It's really not an enthusiastic one, more comfortable resignation.

Overall, I found it awkward and patchy. The points were understandable, though, which is more than you can say for much of what is published.

If you're asking me about what I thought of the position they took and their reasoning, it resonated a lot with me.
