I have absolutely nothing to hide, but this really turns me off, and my guess is that long term their tourism will drop off considerably. In fairness I should add that when we went south by car last year, there were no issues whatsoever.....we didn't even have to show ID.

Let us not forget that we had a chance to avoid this. The Americans asked us to tighten up our borders, and we told them in no uncertain terms that they were not going to dictate policy to the Chretien Government. That our borders are just too darned porous is pretty clear from the number of deportees who return to the country, as well as the astonishing backlog of people we want to deport, particularly criminals.

So knowing that Canada had no intention of being more concerned about it's border, the Americans are trying to make their borders safe. If they cannot be assured of Canada being involved to protect both countries, then they have to put their line of defense at our border. Most canadians cheered, when Paul Martin was openly contemptuous of the US, so they need to not whine when the US makes attempts as ill considered as they may be to keep their country safe. You cannot sneer at people and then expect they are going to come and spend money in your country. Canadians deserve to lose the Americans business, they have worked hard to lose it and they should not complain when it happens.
