When I was in high school band we were dragooned to play at a Reagan rally sometime in spring 1980, at a shopping mall I think. It was the same level of security he had when he was shot in DC, SS guards nearby but no effort to cordon off and totally sanitize the area he was in.

Between Reagan getting shot and 9/11, I don't think the top candidates will ever have that much freedom again except in the very early primaries.
