Greek bus hijacked by 'Russians'
By Times Online, and AFP in Athens

Two armed men hijacked an intercity bus in an Athens suburb early this morning and are holding 26 passengers hostage. A Greek police official has said the gunmen are Russians demanding to be flown back to their country.

The two men, armed with rifles, boarded the bus in the early hours, firing shots into its roof and halting the vehicle in the suburb of Gerakas.

The bus is surrounded by police who have blocked it with a car. Ambulances are standing by and negotiators on the scene.

The private radio station Alpha reported that somebody claiming to be one of the hostage-takers had called it via a mobile phone taken from a woman passenger on the bus. The caller had demanded that police move away from the vehicle so it could be driven to the airport, the radio said. It added one of the two hijackers called himself "Hassan".

A police official, who asked not to be named, said the men were Russians and wanted to fly back to Russia. He added the men were demanding that a driver board the bus to drive it to the airport. The bus driver and ticket collector, plus one woman, managed to escape from the vehicle after the hijacking.

The hostage takers, who had boarded the nightbus from Marathon when it made a stop in the suburb of Pikermi at 5:45 am (0345 GMT), had drawn the curtains and were occasionally firing in the air from its windows.

Earlier reports had said the hostage-takers might be from neighbouring Albania.
