Steve, you can patent even a "method of using a PIN" in specific type of transactions if, of course, these are not "obvious" or not in the prior art. You certainly can patent a unique card. The problem, of course, is that there many ways to make these cards and some of which could be based on art so old that all patents have expired. It sure is going to be an interesting case if challenges are thrown their way.
