A bit = 1
Another bit = 0

Meaning the switch is either open, or closed. That is two bits of information.

A byte is the number of bits used to define a letter, number, comma etc and a computer handles a byte as a single lump. That's 8 bits.

So, 8 bits = one byte. Simple!

Here's some information britannica.com

A two-bit crook is a different thing. It's not that he is short of a byte.

That's my 2 cents,

Mqurice

PS: Linkabit, the antecedent of QUALCOMM, linked bits together. Hence the name. QUALCOMM has gone on to link petatrillions of phragmented photons in a pixilated plasma of global communication soon to accelerate by an order of magnitude with 1xEV, 3G, 4G, and up to 10G.
